MATV Participates in Malden Reads: One City, One Book

Malden Access TV is a collaborative partner in the new community reading program that kicked off in January, 2011.  The “One City, One Book” program seeks to engage the Malden community in reading the same book selection, afterwards encouraging participation in a variety of events and activities, all centered around the themes of the book. The book selection for this year is The Soloist by Steve Lopez. For younger (K-8) readers, age appropriate books with similar themes were chosen so that EVERYONE can take part in this community-building program. MATV is creating video promos for the project. We will be covering the various events and activities, and creating new related programs such as an on-air book discussion and a children’s read-aloud TV program. New_logo_RGBsm As an MATV member and producer, we encourage you to get involved and help make this program a success by “Building Community Through Media.” For complete information about Malden Reads, visit www.maldenreads.org.

MATV Annual Celebration "ARTrageous"

Artrageous All are invited to our MATV Annual Celebration on Thursday, September 23 at the Malden Senior Center beginning at 6pm. This year's theme is "ARTrageous," celebrating the arts in Malden and MATV's role in the arts community. The event will not only feature an art exhibit displaying artwork from nearly all the past exhibitors of the MATV Gallery but, as always, there will be a multi-media presentation, an appreciation awards ceremony, and an election for a new member of the MATV Board of Directors.

The evening will begin with a buffet dinner of homemade potluck dishes, supplemented by food from many of our local restaurants. The feast will be held in the dining room of the Malden Senior Community Center and the after dinner entertainment will be performed in the auditorium of this incredible building.

This is our annual celebration of what MATV is all about- community, connection and communication and if you are part of the MATV community, past, present and even future we encourage you to attend. This is a great chance to see what Malden’s Media Center has been up to over the last year and discuss what we will be doing in the future. It will be an “art  happening” with plenty of fun and surprises.

There is an open seat on the MATV Board of Directors and we are inviting any member in good standing (which means your dues is paid) to run for the seat which is one of three seats elected to represent the membership. If you are interested in running for the three year term, please send a letter of intent to Paula Spizziri, Clerk, MATV Board of Directors at 145 Pleasant St. or email her via access@matv.org.

All are encouraged to dress creatively or just come as you are. A donation of a homemade potluck entrée or dessert is encouraged and we welcome your addition to our multicultural gourmet banquet. In lieu of a food donation, a $5 donation is requested. Please R.S.V.P. (and let us know what sort of food you may be bringing), so that we can plan for this open community celebration. See you at the ARTrageous Happening on September 23.

MATV Presents "We Have a Dream"

A Diverse Community Celebrates the Spirit of Dr. King’s Legacy

Mlk 1 In the spring of 2008, the community of Malden, Massachusetts re-created Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech in a studio at Malden Access Television. Over a period of one week, over 150 community members, representing the incredibly diverse population of this city, each recited a line. Participants in this project were young and old; of every race, creed, and culture; gay and straight; and of varying abilities. The edited video, entitled “We Have A Dream,” not only recalls Martin Luther King’s famously inspirational speech which gave voice to the U.S. civil rights movement, but embodies the dream Dr. King describes, a dream of equality and inclusiveness for all Americans.

The video, which first premiered during Martin Luther King weekend, 2009, will be presented again in 2010 and can be viewed at a variety of venues. On Tuesday, January 12th, it will be screened at the Malden Senior Community Center, 7 Washington St., at 3:00pm, open to everyone with free admission. On Saturday, January 16th, the video will be screened during the 17th annual North Shore Black Women’s Association (NSBWA) Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon at Anthony’s Restaurant in Malden, where MATV will be honored by the NSBWA. On Monday, January 18th, it will be the feature presentation at the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast in Reading, MA. On that day also, it will be posted on the MATV website at www.matv.org and screened throughout the day on the MATV Public Access Channel (Comcast Channel 3 & Verizon Channel 28 in Malden.)

This project was supported in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency, administered through the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
