Open House Showcase 2013

Join Us on Saturday, May 13 from 1:00 - 9:00pm for "Open House Showcase", an Open House, live TV show, and webcast! Come down to our studios for all or part of the fun. Free event! Enjoy live performances, watch "behind the scenes" of a live TV show; enjoy refreshments; and socialize with your neighbors, friends, and new acquaintenances! Here's the live performance schedule:

1:00 - Maggie Leon
Maggie Leon is an R and B Singer/Songwriter out of Malden, MA. She released her debut album, Do You Believe in Me, in 2011. She was the RAW Boston Music of the Year for 2012, and two of her songs from the Do You Believe album got her on the master Grammy ballot for the 55th Grammy Awards. She is currently working on new music with the Grammy-nominated Surefire Music Group.  

1:30 - Wah Lum Kung Fu Academy
To promote the study of the Chinese Martial Arts and for the development of physical, mental, and general well-being of students, Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy offers a wide variety of training programs to allow members to become well-rounded martial artists.

2:00 - Manuel "Coco" Torres
Manuel "Coco" Torres is a musician from Cuba. He plays guitar, bongos and the Cuban trés, among other instruments. He plays regularly at venues in the Boston area, for weddings and private parties, and for Cuban and Hispanic-American cultural gatherings. Currently, he plays at the new Oya Cuban Restaurant on Exchange Street in Malden 

2:30 - Jimmie Caribineris: poet
A founding member of the "Ablevision" TV show, Jimmie also writes poetry & he offers up his unique life experiences. 

3:00 - Darcy Dance Academy
A selection of dances from the Malden-based school, voted "Best of the Best" for five years running.

 

3:30 - Genevieve with Guitarist Dave Crespo
Performing all around New England & NY with her Soulkore Family (www.Soulkore.com), Genevieve's style and ability to switch from singing a slow dancing melody to spitting a head nodding rhyme proves that she's a bright light ready to shine and a talent to be reckoned with. Check out her latest CD at http://genevieve.bandcamp.com/. 

4:00 - Boston Rueda, Latin Salsa
Rueda de Casino is a Cuban social dance in which two, three, four, or even more couples dance together. Boston Rueda is a non for profit organization whose only purpose is to extend friendship and understanding through music and dance, specializing in Latin salsa dance lessons. 

4:30 - Priya Kumar, Indian Dance
Priya has perfomed frequently on MATV and at various special events in Malden and in the greater Boston area. Extensively trained in classical Indian dance, she also incorporates modern Bollywood techniques into some of her dance performances. On Open House Shocase, Priya will be performing a Bengali classical dance. The song is written by Kazi Nazrul, the nation's revolutionary poet. 

 

4:50 - Joe Flynn, Standup Comedy

5:15 - Gerry Beaudoin & Larry Baione - Jazz Guitar duo

6:00 - The Images (Rock-n-Roll band)
Bassist Mike O’Brien and guitarist Pete Schluter have been writing songs and rocking stages together since their high school days. Drummer Jeff Walsh has recently joined the fray and is now playing as if his life depends on it. And in many ways, it does. The Images live for rock 'n' roll.

 

6:30pm - Gedeus (jazz flutist)
Gedeus is a Haitian-born musician who plays guitar, piano, flute, and vocals in a variety of styles. He has performed in many local churches and significant events in Malden such as the mayoral inauguration.  

7:00 - Daniel Laurent (Hip Hop)
“The Steven Spielberg of Boston Hip Hop!”, “A refreshing perspective” are some of the quotes used to describe Daniel Laurent also known as DL regarding his heartfelt, thought provoking music. New album "Hustler's Spirit: The Idea" coming soon. Website: www.daniellaurent.com

 

 

8:00 - "The Change-Up" 
We are THE CHANGE UP. Four guys from The Valley with the ability to make you rethink everything you know about music. We're self-made musicians who combine Rock, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Ska, and The Blues to make a new brand of music you have to hear to believe. 

 

 

The show will be carried LIVE on the web at www.matv.org, and on MATV Public Access Channel (Comcast 3, Verizon 28). It will be re-played in its entirety from 1:00 - 9:00pm on Sunday, May 12 & Monday, May 13, and overnight on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from midnight - 8am. It will also be played back in one-hour segments throughout the summer.

MATV and Malden Reads

Malden Access Television is a co-founder and a lead collaborator, along with the Malden Public Library, in the Malden Reads: One City, One Book program. Now in its third year, Malden Reads is a community-building project that seeks to bring people together over the shared experience of a good book. To that end, MATV helps to network residents, nonprofits, businesses, and community groups to carry out programs, events, and activities that echo the themes of each year's book selection.

This year, the Malden Reads Committee has selected "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian" by Sherman Alexie as the feature book selection. An engaging and humorous coming-of-age story that features cartoon drawings along with prose, this novel reveals some truths about the contemporary life of Native Americans while it explores universal themes of identity, "straddling two worlds," overcoming adversity, and harnessing the tools of one's own resiliency. You can buy a copy of this book at MATV ($11) or, of course, borrow a copy from the Malden Public Library.

Annual "Cans for the Community" Food Drive

MATV's Annual "Cans for the Community" food drive continues through December 21. Drop off non-perishable food items at Malden Access Television, 145 Pleasant Street, to benefit the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Those who donate 5 items or more will receive a free membership to MATV (for new members only). MATV is open Monday - Thursday, 10am - 9pm; Friday, 10am - 6pm; and Saturday, 10am - 2pm. Please check the expiration date on all items before donating. Thank you for helping us serve our community.   

Angel Tree Toy Drive at MATV

This holiday season, Malden Access Television is please to take part in the Angel Tree Toy Drive sponsored by the Salvation Army. Come down to MATV after November 26th and choose a tag from our lobby Christmas tree. The tag will have the first name of a child, his/her age, and a wish for a specific toy or game. You would then purchase the item indicated and return it to MATV (unwrapped). MATV will be delivering the toys to the Salvation Army. Along with many other businesses, organizations, and houses of worship, the Salvation Army will be collecting thousands of new toys and gifts to be distributed to children throughout the area. MATV will be recording Holiday Greetings beginning on Wednesday, November 28th 1pm-9pm. Thursday, November 29th noon-4pm. Friday, November 30th 1pm-5:30pm. Monday, December 3rd noon-6pm. Tuesday, December 4th 1pm-7pm. Wednesday & Thursday, December 5th & 6th 1pm-4pm. And Tuesday, December 11th 1pm-9pm.

 

 

7th Annual Haunted Studio @ MATV

The "Haunted Studio" will be on Wednesday, October 31st from 3:20pm - 5pm. This is a live event and will be cablecasted on both Comcast Ch. 15 & Verizon Ch. 24.
Kids in costume, ages 10 & under, can take a fright tour through our Haunted Studio as part of the Malden Chamber of Commerce Trick-or-Treat event in Malden Square.

MATV Presents "Video Shorts 2012"

Malden Access Television (MATV) will be presenting its annual “Video Shorts,” a film screening event held during MATV Week, on Wednesday, May 16^th at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30) at the Malden Senior Community Center. This year, the feature presenter is Catherine Russo, a Malden native and a longtime activist and media producer. Catherine will be presenting clips from her almost-finished feature film “A Moment in Her Story: A History of the Boston Women’s Movement” which premiered at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge last month. Russo has spent 20 years researching and compiling archival material and interviewing women activists about this segment of the larger women’s movement of the late 1960s and 70s, of which she herself was a part.

“Inches away from completing the film”, Russo is currently raising the funds needed to bring it to completion with a music soundtrack. Come see clips of this fascinating documentary, hear about the process of creating it –some of the interviews were done at MATV many years ago—and give your feedback and comments. Donations towards the final completion of the film will also be gratefully accepted. Don’t miss this opportunity to preserve and recall an important part of Boston’s history. MATV plans have a screening of the film when it is completed.

The feature presentation will be preceded by a few short videos, including a music video “Dog Days Are Over” by Boston College film major sophomore David Riemer, and “You Look Great” by Christopher Byler. “You Look Great” is a 6-minute experimental style video that takes an experiential look at Traumatic Brain Injury. It is told from the view of the filmmaker’s father, John Byler, who is a TBI victim. Marilyn Spivak, founder of the Brain Injury Association of America, says “With great insight, courage and humor, John gives us a rare view of what it’s like to live with the injury. His story, images, and metaphors open up a world typically closed, invisible ignored, or misunderstood.”

Don’t miss this chance to see some dynamic and thoughtful media productions presented by the artists, with an opportunity for audience questions and discussions. Doors open at 6:30pm and the program will run until 9:00. Refreshments will be served.
